April 14, 2011 : Testimonial letter from Jane Betsold of the Hatfield Council on Aging
By: Jane Betsold

So here is what the head of the Hatfield Council on Aging said about my solo performance of "A Musical Journey" that I recently performed for them.

Hi Dan,
It was such a pleasure having you play at our Volunteer Recognition last night! Everyone had a wonderful time and all comments were that the entertain was the best! They all loved your program! You have a wonderful outgoing personality, and like I said last night…as soon as I met you I knew you were going to fit right in with our group of people here in Hatfield. We like to have a good time, kid around with each other, and just enjoy the good times while we can.
We definitely will be giving you a call back in the future!
Again, thank you for helping make our Volunteer Recognition a night that people will talk about for quite awhile….

Hope we weren’t too rough a kitchen crew for you! The relationship that I have with my Board Members goes back over 20 years and we are more like family than co-workers. Guess that’s what happens when you work somewhere for so many years!

Thanks from all of us!

Jane

January 06, 2011 : LiveWire Awards 2010

LiveWire Awards 2011 by Donnie Morehouse
A little bit of everything.
That may be the best way to describe the entries in this year’s LiveWire Awards campaign.
Rather than a plethora of recordings from the hard rock / metal genre, one of the mainstays of the Springfield scene, or a grouping of singer / songwriter material usually associated with the upper Pioneer Valley, this year’s entries were all over the musical map.
The eventual top picks, listed below, reflect the diversity in our musical community as well. From alternative rock to Americana and even an avant-garde guitar orchestra, the feted recordings cover a lot of ground picks do reflect one writer’s opinion and the recordings are across the musical spectrum.
These judged mainly on the music but points are awarded for production as well.
We did receive a handful of demo tapes that show extreme promise and we look forward to featuring those artists in upcoming editions of LiveWire.
With that, here are the LiveWire Awards for local recordings released in 2010.
Dan Daniels & Your No Good Buddies, “Nobody’s Fool” – Daniels once called the music he made with his talented buddies “geezer rock.” In truth, YNGB lies more in the folk / Americana realm with this collection of songs fueled by fiddles, mandolins, and pedal steel. The picking is deft and the harmonies are wonderful on songs like “On My Knees,” and “Long Long Time.”

The band does “rock” on the brief but satisfying “Katy Katy,” and goes for an island feel on the comical “Wanted in Connecticut.”
Regardless of how it is categorized, the music of YNGB is purposely simple and wholly accessible. The band plays the area regularly and more information is available at yngb.com

The Stone Coyotes “My Turn” – This enduring rock trio is known for its hard, edgy sound and unrelenting live show. That shouldn’t overshadow the fact that lead singer Barbara Keith is easily the best ballad writer to ever grace the local scene. On their tenth independent release, the listener gets a dose of both with rockers like the title track balanced by the ballad “Almost Sounds like California.” The Stone Coyotes also prove they have something to offer in between with mid-tempo, acoustic based songs like “Ship of Fools,” and “Roses and Bones.”
The Stone Coyotes can be heard regularly on satellite radio and on episodes of “Dog the Bounty Hunter,” but for the full effect, log on to stonecoyotes.com to get this and their other collections.
The band, Keith with her husband Doug Tibbles (drums) and step-son John Tibbles (bass) continues to evolve without ever changing what is at the very core of their musical existence; loud, honest, rock’ n’ roll.

Happy Valley Guitar Orchestra, “HVGO” – The Happy Valley Guitar Orchestra is exactly what it says it is, a collection of guitarists sectioned off to play in an orchestra setting. The HVGO plays the music of legacy and contemporary composers, with the works arranged and conducted by Peter Blanchette.
This 14-song collection covers everything from Bartok to Morricone’s themes from the films of Sergio Leone including “The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly,” and “Once Upon A Time in the West.”
Blanchette deserves kudos for his beautiful interpretations and the multitude of local guitarists on board earn credit for wonderfully fulfilling his vision. Check them out at hvgo.org

'Hamp show to beneift local charities

Who could ask for more?

On Saturday night Dan Daniels and Your No Good Buddies will play a benefit concert at the World War II Veteran's Club on Conz Street in Northampton with support from the Cobble Mountain Bluegrass Band and the Mary Kate Band. Donations will be accepted at the door for the Catholic charity Faith in Action and canned goods will also be accepted for the Northampton Survival Center.

Great local music that benefits local charities...who could ask for more?

Certainly not Ellen J. Clary.

The show is being billed as the Ellen J. Clary Memorial Benefit Concert and is being played in honor of Clary who passed away last year.

"She was 59 years old and she died unexpectedly," said Dan Daniels, brother of Clary who orchestrated the memorial. "She loved a good time and she loved to go out and hear live music."

According to Daniels, Clary volunteered for Faith In Action to help elderly and handicapped people live independently.

"She liked to help people less fortunate than herself," Daniels said.

In true "two bird...one stone" fashion he decided the best way to honor his sister's legacy would be with a benefit concert.

"We are asking for a $5 donation at the door for Faith in Action," he said. "You can also get in with a non-perishable food item for the emergency food pantry of the Northampton Survival Center."

The show will begin at 8 p.m.

"It is a guaranteed good time for a good cause," Daniels said. "Who could ask for more?"

Chicopee resident Ellen Clary was a big fan of music in general, and of her brother's band in particular, that group of aging boomers familiar to Valley audiences as Dan Daniels and Your No Good Buddies. Though she suffered from long periods of disabling migraine headaches, Clary was a dedicated volunteer who worked with Faith in Action, a Catholic Charity devoted to helping disabled and older people live independently as long as possible.
Coming suddenly and without apparent cause, Clary's death on Dec. 15 at age 59 was a shock to many. This Saturday a special concert will be held in her memory. Running 8pm to midnight at the World War II Club in Northampton, the music will be provided by three very different bands. The show will open with the Bluegrass sounds of the Cobble Mountain Band, followed by the Jazz/blues/pop-rock of The Mary Kate Band and suceeded by the Americana roots-rock of Dan Daniels and Your No Good Buddies...
A $5 donation at the door will go to Faith in Action and "we are asking people to bring nonperishable food items to be donated to the emergency food pantry of the Northampton Survival Center" says Daniels.
The World War II Club is located at 50 Conz St. in Northampton

Where do they all come from?
Every year, when the submission guidelines are announced for the Live Wire
Awards the mail gets a little heavier down at the Republican. It is still fairly amazing the amount of music that is put out in the Pioneer Valley every year....
Here is a list of the best recordings we have received in 2007. The recordings are available at live shows, through band-artist Web sites, and occasioinally at record stores that carry local music. If you are considering checking out any of these artists live, or purchasing their disc, consider their inclusion here as a full endorsement of the work.
Now the list - in no particular order....
